In 1984, David Lynch wrote and directed *Dune*, an epic space opera set in a distant future. The film adapts Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name and was shot at Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. Its score was created by the rock band Toto, with an additional contribution from Brian Eno. The cast is large and includes Kyle MacLachlan in his first film role, alongside Patrick Stewart, Brad Dourif, Dean Stockwell, Virginia Madsen, José Ferrer, Sean Young, Silvana Mangano, Sting, Linda Hunt, and Max von Sydow.
The story unfolds on the harsh desert planet Arrakis, also called Dune, the sole source of the spice melange. This drug grants prescience and is essential for space travel, making it the universe’s most vital commodity. Rival noble families fight for control of the planet. Paul Atreides, heir to a powerful house, is sent to govern Arrakis, sparking conflict with its former rulers, House Harkonnen. Paul may also be the Kwisatz Haderach, a messianic figure foretold by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood.
Attempts to adapt the novel began in 1971 after its initial success. Throughout the 1970s, Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott each tried and failed to bring their versions to the screen. In 1981, executive producer Dino De Laurentiis hired Lynch to direct. The film cost $40–42 million to make but earned only $30.9 million at the box office, a financial failure. At least four different versions have been released worldwide. Lynch largely disowned the finished work and had his name removed or replaced with pseudonyms in the credits of certain cuts. Although it received mostly negative reviews upon release, *Dune* later gained a cult following, though opinions differ among fans of the novel and fans of Lynch’s other films.

Paul is possibly the Kwisatz Haderach, a messianic figure expected by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. After the Harkonnen attack with aid from the Emperor's Sardaukar troops, Paul and his mother Jessica escape into the desert, where they join the Fremen. Paul emerges as their messiah, leads raids on spice mining, and ultimately defeats the Emperor and Harkonnen forces.
